Match Safes

Match safes were used in the late 1800s and early 1900s to carry the "strike anywhere" matches universally used at that time. They were made to fit in the gentlemen’s vest or pants pocket. Match safes came in many styles and decorations. Most were either made of silver or nickel plated brass. There were quite a few designed with the sportsman in mind. Some fishing ones are shown here. The 5th one is a wall hanging match holder. The matches are kept in the creel.

FYI: Did you know that the match was chosen the greatest invention of the 19th century? It was invented in the 1830's.

Notes

There are not a great many different fishing theme match safes, but there are still some out there. Let me know if you have one not pictured here.
