The River - 2006

This was the year that I began to understand what I had been missing for the past 45 years. The jet boat allowed access to parts of the river that I had never seen before. I had drifted the river in a Jon boat in the past, but had never been able to spend the time to look over every riffle or eddy.

After several scary moments while pulling my boat out of the river ramps, I decided it was time to get a full sized pickup that could provide a bit more confidence that I would get home.
I caught my first good smallmouth in February this year - a nice fat 18" fish.

The fish in the river have nice coloration during the summer, as shown on this fish. They are a bit lighter in early spring with the water more colored and with less light during the day.

September 6. This day I caught a nice 17" fish that had two scars on its side and was missing an eye. It was caught on a buzz bait. On September 29 I caught the same fish - which I called "Old Ugly". This time he was about 1/2 mile upstream from where he was when caught on the 6th. The second time he was caught on a spinnerbait.

Catch and release does work!

Deer. Lots of deer live on the riverbanks or on islands in the river. I often catch them swimming from shore to an island, or visa-versa.

I have seen several decent bucks while fishing, but no longer have any interest in deer hunting. I have killed many mule deer and whitetails over the past 50 years.

Bert's Bar. This spot on the river I named after Bert the Boykin, my regular fishing partner. Bert loved to get out on this sandbar and hunt the edges of the river. I caught a lot of fish on this bend in the river. Bert was a funny dog in that he could care less about the fish, but loved to go in that boat.
