Lew Perkins Tournament Reel
This is a
Lew Perkins distance casting reel. According to those who should know, it is
a second model, step staff reel. Perkins, of Dayton, Ohio made approximately
20 of these reels.
There were several of these reels being used at the 1996 National Casting
Championships in Oakland, California, and they are still in demand by
competitors, but they are being gobbled up by collectors and the price has
risen beyond what tournament casters are willing to pay.
In the 1990s the most popular reel for 5/8 oz. distance casting was the Abu 2100. Steve Rajeff held the national record at that time with a long
cast of 518 feet.
